Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related business closures, the TSL’s Executive Committee voted unanimously to cancel the Development Division’s 2020 Season. The league plans to resume operating the development division for the 2021 season.
At this time, the league continues to monitor the situation, optimistic that the Premier Division’s 2020 Season will be able to be played as scheduled. Updates will be provided as they become available.
The Edenton Steamers organization is excited to announce that Marshall McDonald has been hired as the new Head Coach for the 2020 season. McDonald is currently an Assistant Coach at Montreat College in Montreat, NC. He is heading into his second season with the Cavaliers.
McDonald will look to add another successful notch in his summer collegiate coaching belt, as this will be his sixth consecutive summer on the field. He served as the Head Coach of the Lexington County Blowfish (Coastal Plain League) for the past two seasons.
The TSL’s Premier Division announce plans for 5 teams to participate in 2020 season. Joining the Tidewater Drillers, Greenbrier Knights and Outer Banks Daredevils will be the Edenton Steamers and the Old Dominion Hitters.
The TSL’s Premier Division teams will play a 36 game regular season schedule, plus the post season play-off series and league championship series. The season is set to open on May 29, 2020, and will conclude the post season August 1, 2020.
The TSL announced that the Edenton Steamers will host the Premier Division’s inaugural All-Star Game, time and date is TBA.
The Tidewater Summer League is excited to see a pair of our alumni playing in the 2019 MBL World Series. Ryan Zimmerman, National’s first basemen (University of Virginia, Tidewater Drillers) and Daniel Hudson, National’s pitcher (Old Dominion University, Greenbrier Knights) will help to lead the Washington Nationals against the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball’s 2019 World Series.

The 2019 season of the Tidewater Collegiate Summer Baseball League has concluded for the year, and we grateful for all the hard work put in by our coaches, interns and staff, making 2019 another outstanding season of collegiate summer baseball.
The 2019 season brought together 224 college players from around the country, along with 24 coaches and a dozen interns, all with a shared goal of player development, getting consistent reps in the field and daily live at bats, developing a solid baseball related daily work out routine and a chance to take a step forward in their baseball careers. Virginia Beach was definitely the place to be this summer for college players.
We watched as our players got in over 20,000 hours of work outs, strength and conditioning, speed and agility, hitting, throwing, receiving, position play, base running and team practices, played in 87 games, logging 783 innings of great collegiate wood bat summer baseball.
We watched as our players continued to develop their baseball skills throughout the season, putting in the hard work off the field that was visible as they took the field each day.
Daily, personal, baseball focused work outs became habits, reinforced by our daily games, and our hope is that our players will continue their daily work outs during the remainder of the summer and return to their respective schools a better baseball player than when they left last spring.
We saw our hitters get better each week, with hitters becoming more disciplined, going to the plate with a solid approach and a plan, and QAB’s went up for all our hitters as the season progressed, a testament to their commitment to the developmental program.
We saw our pitching staffs go from 240 – 250 pitches per game down to 160 – 170 pitches per game, and from a dozen plus BB’s per game down to 3 or 4, first pitch strike %’s climbing across the board, and at the end of our season we saw a healthy staff of arms league wide, reinforcing the value of a daily throwing/arm care program that focuses on a proper pre-game and post game routine, warm up progressions, off day throwing routines designed to improve not only control but command.
We saw player confidence rise and we also saw players enjoying the opportunity to take the field each day playing the game they love. We watched as players put in their time on the tees and in the cages, working together daily, in the weight room, pens and fields, and doing it with a smile and excitement as the results made the sweat and grind worthwhile.
We saw friendships formed on the playing fields and in the dugouts, we saw young men conducting themselves in a manner that would make their parents, college coaches and friends proud, as competitiveness and sportsmanship were seen as one.
We saw a new champion crowned, as the Lakewood Legends won their first Postove Cup Championship, adding their name to the Tidewater Summer League’s Champions List. Congratulations to Coach Roberto Vaz and Coach Cody Ortego and all the Legends players.
We watched the MLB draft and once again were excited to see some of our former players getting their name called out as the dream of playing professional baseball instantly became a reality.
We are proud to have been a small part of every players baseball experience, and for those fortunate enough to make it to the next level, we rejoice with them and their families.
We once again saw a dozen of our league’s top players get picked up by some of the country’s top collegiate summer league teams, whose season’s run into the first of August, extending their summer season and providing them with the opportunity to go from our “minor league spring training” style summer program to a “minor league regular season” style program.
We want to say a big Virginia Beach THANK YOU to all of our players, coaches, interns and staff for another great summer.

Congratulations to Evan Keller, LSU-Eunice, on being named the 2019 Tidewater Collegiate Summer Baseball League’s Most Valuable Player. Keller had an outstanding summer, helping to led his Lakewood Legends to the 2019 Championship, and went 6 -6 in the Championship Game.
The sun was shining at Perry Field on the beautiful campus of Virginia Wesleyan University as the 2019 League Championship Game got underway. The Norfolk Redbirds and the Lakewood Legends used their bats to settle the 2019 Championship, combining to score 36 runs in the 9 inning contest, with the Lakewood Legends coming out on top, claiming their first Tidewater Collegiate Summer Baseball League Championship.
Congratulations Lakewood Legends, you are our 2019 Champions. The Legends are managed by Head Coach Roberto Vaz and Assistant Coach Cody Ortego.
We would also like to congratulate the Norfolk Redbirds with their second place finish, and an overall great summer season. The Redbirds are managed by Head Coach Jon Gold and Assistant Coaches Alec Bryant and Chase Stewart.

Lakewood Legends and Norfolk Redbirds traded blows on Friday in a back-and-forth affair, with Lakewood Legends eventually claiming a 19-17 victory. The game was tied at nine with Lakewood Legends batting in the bottom of the fourth when Evan Keller singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Lakewood Legends was boosted by Keller who went 6-for-6 at the plate. Keller homered in the first, singled in the second, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, singled in the seventh, and singled in the eighth.
Lakewood Legends opened up an early lead in the second inning when.
Lakewood Legends took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Cody Sandlin grounded out, scoring one run.
Lakewood Legends scored five runs in the seventh inning. Drew Hill had an RBI single in the inning to lead the run scoring.
Norfolk Redbirds scored three runs in the eighth inning. Norfolk Redbirds scored its runs on a error by Christopher Mills.
Azriel Davidson was credited with the victory for Lakewood Legends. He went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two. A number of pitchers entered the game as relief, with Kyle McShaffry, Dylan Schumacher, Logan Dunbar, and Nytorious Cooler all securing outs and ultimately the victory.
Justin Durnil took the loss for Norfolk Redbirds. He allowed three hits and two runs over one and one-third innings, striking out one.
Ethan Buckley started the game for Norfolk Redbirds. He went one inning, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out one Cody Ray started the game for Lakewood Legends. He went two and a third innings, allowing seven runs on three hits and striking out two
Lakewood Legends launched one home run on the day. Keller had a long ball in the first inning.
Lakewood Legends had 19 hits in the game. Keller, Bo Gonzales, Hill, Austin Kirkpatrick, and Bren Faulk each managed multiple hits for Lakewood Legends. Keller went 6-for-6 at the plate to lead Lakewood Legends in hits.
Norfolk Redbirds racked up 15 hits in the game. Jordan Hara, Mills, Peter Stauber, Carlo Zorola, and Ben Berger each collected multiple hits for Norfolk Redbirds. Hara led Norfolk Redbirds with four hits in six at bats.

Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, Portsmouth Yardbirds still held off Virginia Beach Shredders for a 5-4 victory on Thursday. Virginia Beach Shredders scored three runs in the failed comeback on a double by Kevin Worrell and a single by Daniel Lilja.
Portsmouth Yardbirds earned the victory despite allowing Virginia Beach Shredders to score three runs in the seventh inning. Virginia Beach Shredders‘s big inning was driven by a single by Lilja and a double by Worrell.
Portsmouth Yardbirds fired up the offense in the second inning. Liam Geib‘s sac fly scored one run for Portsmouth Yardbirds.
Robert McDaniel took the win for Portsmouth Yardbirds. He surrendered one run on four hits over six innings, striking out three and walking zero. Brook Hamilton and Noah Floyd entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Hamilton recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Portsmouth Yardbirds.
William VanSickle took the loss for Virginia Beach Shredders. He lasted five innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out three.
