Head Coach: Jonathan Cumpston;

Coach Jonathan Cumpston comes into his sixth season coaching, and his first coaching the Lakewood Legends. This summer season will be his second Head Coaching position, with his first stint coaching the Fellowship of Christian Athletes summer collegiate Rangers baseball team in Northern Virginia in 2015. He is a former pitcher at Mars Hill University with a proficiency in teaching pitchers and outfielders, player development, and scouting. Coach Cumpston is an experienced pitching coach with a comprehensive and unique platform of building mechanically solid pitchers through preparation and mental development by equipping them to produce proven successful results. He has had individual training and been mentored by the great pitching minds of Randy Jones (1976 NL Cy Young Award, San Diego Padres), Tom House (National Pitching Association), and Jim Vatcher and China McCarney (Jaeger Sports).

Coach Cumpston recently has worked in the baseball industry as an Advanced Scout independently and worked as the Director of Baseball Operations for the U.S. Military All-Stars. He was a part of winning back-to-back state championships at Hampton Christian in 2001 and 2002 and was an all-state and all-region pitcher both of those seasons. Jonathan is also a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served our country for five years as an Avionics Technician in San Diego, California. He is engaged to be married this coming April to Laura DeHollander, and currently resides in Norfolk, Virginia.


Assistant Coach: Bill Cumpston;

A native of San Diego now living in Newport News, VA, Coach Bill Cumpston has coached youth up through high school and college level players over his 20 year coaching career.  His most recent experience was as an assistant coach in the Tidewater Collegiate Summer League during the 2017 season.  He was a three year starter at catcher, 3rd base, and center field during high school and played winter instructional baseball in Los Angeles alongside college and minor league players.  His coaching highlights include, assistant coach with the Hampton Christian VISSA Division II State Championships in 2001 and 2002, and assistant coach and head coach at Summit Christian School’s conference championship in 2014.

Coach Cumpston is a highly knowledgeable baseball coach, leader, and mentor known for developing fundamentally skilled players.  He is accomplished in training catchers, infield and outfielder positions, as well as possessing excellent in-game strategy and tactics.  As a pitching coach, he is trained in Bio-Mechanics methods and the Jaeger Pitching Method which stresses arm conditioning/arm strength (bands), mental preparation, and flexibility/balance.

Coach Cumpston is a Coast Guard veteran and was part of supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war on terrorism in Libya.  He is a graduate of Averett University in Danville, VA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude.  He is married to Robin Montague from Roxboro, NC, and has two sons, Zachary and Jonathan.  He also works part-time for the Virginia Department of Transportation, enjoys playing golf, and loves following his hometown favorite team, the San Diego Padres.


General Manager: Mike Milligan

Mike Milligan is in his ninth season as Varsity Head Coach at Norfolk Christian High School, a VISAA Division 1 program committed to building championship character first.  In 2017, Norfolk Christian also announced Mike would be the first coach for their newly formed Post Graduate Baseball program.  It will be developed from the ground up to offer players the option to train and play one season between high school and college while retaining four years of collegiate eligibility, improving their academic transcript and developing their baseball ability.

Prior to coaching at Norfolk Christian, Mike was a student coach, graduate assistant and high school coach in North Carolina.  He has also served as Head Coach for American Legion teams in VA and NC.  In addition to leading Norfolk Christian’s baseball varsity and Post Grad program, he is a baseball scout with National Scouting Report, creator of Championship College Planning and Financial Planner at ZGP Financial.   A former player at Scotland High School and Campbell University, he is in his first year with the Tidewater Summer League as General Manager of the Lakewood Legends.
