We are excited to have 4 new independently owned and operated collegiate summer teams, the Virginia Beach Valor, the Norfolk Destroyers, the GS2 Mothmen and the Coastal Coconuts, joining the Greenbrier Knights for exciting collegiate summer baseball this summer.

While our local Tidewater area teams will be competing against one another throughout the summer, we will also see them travelling to play against other collegiate teams in both Virginia and North Carolina, providing the players with an outstanding summer baseball experience.

We hope all of our area baseball fans will come out to see our local collegiate players competing with wood bats in great collegiate summer baseball action. We want to take this opportunity to say thank you to our players, coaches, fans, sponsors, interns and umpires for their tireless efforts this summer.

Through the rain, the schedule changes and all adversity, everyone remained focused on controlling the controllable and getting the most of the summer season.

July 6, 2023 – Manteo, NC

Under sunny skies, the 2023 Premier Collegiate League All Star Celebration got under way on Thursday, July 6th, at 4:30pm with an all star player meet and greet, followed by our Home Run Derby and our all star game activities included Sven, from Skydive OBX, parachuting into the ballpark with our game ball; Rev. Marc O’Neil, team chaplain and pastor of Mt. Olivet UMC, opening the game with a word of prayer; Manteo’s own “Lighthouse Brass” playing our National Anthem, and Mike Flaskey was on hand throwing out the first pitch and joining the derby hitters for a round of BP himself.

Kenny Schaedel (Louisburg College/Greenbrier Knights) won the Home Run Derby in impressive style. Joining Kenny in the final round were Scott McDonough (Portal/Univ. of Ark. Little Rock/Greenbrier Knights), Khris Morris (Pitt CC/Edenton Steamers) and Davis Hallstead (Univ. of Mt. Olive/Edenton Steamers). We would like to thank all of our Derby participants for putting on a great show for the fans.

The All Star Game, as usual, was dominated by great pitching, with the PCL All Stars taking advantage of a big inning to give themselves a lead they would not surrender. The PCL pitching came out on top, combining for a nine inning shutout, while the offense put a 10 spot on the board.

Ashe Ammerlaan (Bryant & Stratton/Outer Banks Scallywags) was named Most Valuable Player for his dominate 3 strike out performance on the mound during his inning of work.

We would like to say a special thanks to Audra Nelson, Scallywags Operations Manager for putting together a first class all star event.

We would also like to thank Scallywags coaches Alexander and Doss for their tireless work getting the field prepared. We would also like to thank all of the coaches, interns, players and staff for making the 2023 PCL All Star game an event to remember.

We also want to thank Pigman’s BBQ for providing our post game meal. The players, coaches and interns enjoyed every bit, oink and hushpuppy.

Finally, we would like to thank the fans who made their way to Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field to enjoy the Home Run Derby and All Star Game and festivities. Thank you for your support.

The 2023 Tidewater Summer League All-Star Team has been announced.

The TSL All Stars will be travelling to Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field on the beautiful campus of Manteo High School, 829 Wingina Ave. Manteo, NC 27954 on Thursday, July 6th for our All Star Celebration. More information to come.

Our TSL teams will open their 2023 season with road games in Colonial Heights, VA, Manteo, NC, and Tarboro, NC.

The 2023 season will open on Saturday, June 3rd, as the Greenbrier Knights will be travelling to Colonial Heights, VA to take on the Tri-City Chili Peppers. Game time is 7:00pm at Shepherd Stadium.

Tuesday night, June 6th will see the Norfolk Redbirds travel to Manteo, NC to take on the Outer Banks Scallywags (formerly the Daredevils), in their first game of the 2023 season. Game time is 7pm at Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field.

Wednesday night, June 7th, the Virginia Beach Sea Dogs will kick off their 2023 season with a trip to Tarboro, NC to take on the Tarboro River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm at Tarboro Municipal Stadium.

The Redbirds are excited to announce that Sean Montgomery will serve as head coach of the Norfolk Redbirds for the 2023 season.

Sean Montgomery is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Christopher Newport baseball team now in his third stint with the Captains. He first joined the CNU coaching staff from 2011-12 before rejoining the Captains in 2016-17 and again starting in 2022. 

Bringing a vast amount of coaching experience to the program, he previously served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan from 2009-11 before returning for three more years from 2013-15. After the 2017, he went back to the Marlins for a four-year stretch through the 2020 season. 

Coach Montgomery has made Regional appearances in 2011, 2012, 2022 with CNU, 2018 with VWU and a World Series appearance in 2012 with CNU.

Prior to his time with the Marlins, he has also coached for two seasons at Tallwood High School and three at Kempsville. 

Before joining the coaching ranks, Montgomery was an All-District designated hitter and catcher at Salem High School before moving on to catch at Louisburg Junior College for two seasons.

The Redbirds are excited to have Coach Montgomery leading the club this summer.
