After storms forced the postponement of play last Thursday (June 25th) at PNC Park in Kill Devil Hills between the Outer Banks Daredevils and Tidewater Drillers, the two teams picked up right where they had left off five days prior on Tuesday evening at the First Flight Baseball Complex in a rare twin-bill set.
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, both the Daredevils and Drillers battled to a stalemate until the top of the seventh inning in Game One of the double-header when Tidewater’s Grant Mariano scored for the Drillers off a wild pitch by Outer Banks’ Colton Harlow (7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 6 K). Outer Banks would flip the script, however, in Game Two as they posted five runs (Ryan Creps, Evan Hanifee, Logan Quimuyog, Chris Childress and Julio Rosales) in the bottom of the first to seize a commanding 5-0 early advantage over the Drillers.
Tidewater would strike back methodically over the middle portion of the abbreviated (seven innings instead of the regular nine regulation frames) contest as the Drillers posted all six of their runs courtesy of two-spots in the top of the third, fourth and sixth innings.
With Game Two tied at 6-6, it was Outer Banks’ Evan Hanifee that proved to be the hero of the evening as his LF gap shot in the bottom of the sixth brought Ryan Creps home to put the Daredevils back on top 7-6.
A second Tuesday strikeout by ‘Devils RHP Chris Cobb (his team-leading 28th K of the season) in the top of the seventh helped push Outer Banks across the finish line as they held on for the one-score victory to improve to 9-3 on the year (Tidewater Drillers: 2-2).
