Late Score Costs Norfolk Redbirds Against Portsmouth Yardbirds

Norfolk Redbirds lost the lead late in an 11-9 defeat to Portsmouth Yardbirds on Monday.Portsmouth Yardbirds trailed 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning when Cam Wallace homered on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs.

Despite the loss, Norfolk Redbirds did collect 11 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Portsmouth Yardbirds had seven hits on the way to victory.

Norfolk Redbirds captured the lead in the second inning. Norfolk Redbirds scored one run when Taylor Heck singled.

Portsmouth Yardbirds knotted the game up at seven in the top of the sixth inning, when Daniel Qin singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.

After Portsmouth Yardbirds scored one run in the top of the ninth, Norfolk Redbirds answered with one of their own. Portsmouth Yardbirds scored when Christian Maloney induced Claude Hayes to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored. Norfolk Redbirds then answered when Christian Szablewski singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Norfolk Redbirds tallied five runs in the second inning. Norfolk Redbirds put the pressure on, lead by singles by HeckBen Berger, and Darren McKeown.

Portsmouth Yardbirds scored three runs in the sixth inning. Portsmouth Yardbirds scored its runs on a walk by Justice Page.

Page got the win for Portsmouth Yardbirds. He surrendered one run on three hits over three innings, striking out two. Brook Hamilton and Christopher Lansdowne entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Maloney took the loss for Norfolk Redbirds. He went three and a third innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out two and walking zero.
